  • Objectives

    • Our key objectives in this semester are to evaluate some sociological notions with their conceptual areas.

  • the Holism-Individualism debate

    • One of the central dichotomies in the annals of social sciences is the dichotomy of individualism and holism .Individualism and holism represent two key theoretical perspectives that have for many decades steered and shaped sociological thought. The discussions primarily focus on two issues: first, the existence of social phenomena as sui generis and their relationship to individuals. Secondly, to what degree should social scientific explanations concentrate on individuals vs social phenomena?

  • First section

    • The concept of holism originates from the term “holos” signifying “whole”. it contains the meanings of entirety and totality. It is a philosophical conception based on the postulate that “a whole is much more than the sum of its components”. This position was adopted in many scientific disciplines (biology, sociology…).

  • Definition and scope

    • Individualism and holism represent two key theoretical perspectives that have, for many decades, steered and shaped sociological thought. The holism-individualism controversy, in its various iterations, primarily addresses ontological and explanatory concerns. The individualistic perspective (rooted in the Weberian approach) attributes its explanations to rational individuals and their motivations and views. The holistic perspective (rooted in the Durkheimian approach) grounds its explanations in social entities or attributes (structures, groups).
